Box Braids Gone All Wrong! Keep This From Happening to You

Have you ever experienced the excruciating pain from hair braiding? I’m sure we all have! It is one of the worst feelings in the world and the worst part is that the pain doesn’t end once you leave the stylist seat. It may take about a week or even two for the pain to subside.

Most people believe that braids should be tight. This is a myth! In fact, having tight braids is one of the worst things you could possibly do to your hair. If your stylist refuses or is unable to provide you with braids that don’t inflict pain, then you should consider switching stylist. If you want edges and a head full of undamaged hair, then you need braids that do not inflict pain. Looking great shouldn’t be painful.

Three important tips:

  • You should not have extra large braids on a small section of hair. This adds unnecessary weight to your hair, which will cause breakage-especially on your edges.

  • Keep Scalp moisturized using a butter or oil… coconut oil, olive oil etc.

  • Try not to leave braids in for more than two months. If you decide to leave them in for a long period of time, get a touch up and this way, you’ll be able to cleanse your scalp and have a fresher look.

  • Have you ever considered doing box braids yourself? It may take a while to install, however you will be able to control how much pain you inflict on yourself.

You should try doing them yourself next time! Let us know when you do!

  1. Someone had to say it! So true and I agree with everything in this article. When I got my hair braided before by the Africans, they ALWAYS did my hair to tight. Like my scalp was in the braids and I had a smiling-fit for the next two weeks. And sure enough my edges were thinning and my hair was breaking. How ironic in a protective style! So I switched braiders, gave them want I wanted, and made sure she was not braiding my hair tightly…or I’m out the door. Great article!

  2. I got my hair in box braids with weave which i feel was a bad idea lol…on monday ive been in so much pain i got bumps on my sclap literally its burning and my head hurts
