We’ve all been there. Standing in front of the mirror, the old pin-the-sides-back-with-bobby pins, the ultimate sign of defeat when you throw your hands in the air and just throw all your hair into the poof. We’ve all struggled with a twist out at one point in our natural hair journey. Hopefully, after today, with these tips and tricks, you’ll be ready to tackle a twist out!
We begin at the beginning…
#1 A good clarifying every month or so is a life saver. How do you know when it’s time to clarify, you ask? Well, whenever your hair stops reacting to products like it used or whenever it feels heavier than it usually does. Clarifying shampoo is a more deep cleaning shampoo and shouldn’t be done too often. Whenever I clarifying, I always follow up with a deep conditioning!
#2 Now that your hair is shampooed and conditioned, it’s time to add your styling products! Everyone’s hair is different, but this is what I’ve found to be the most successful. First, a light leave in conditioner or hair milk.
#3 Next, after a leave in, I’ll do something a little heavier, something that comes out of a tub. This is going to be your moisturizer.
#4 Okay, by now your hair should be good and supple with your leave in and your moisturizer, at this point it’s time to seal all that goodness in! I am a die hard almond oil fan and I find myself recommending it everywhere that I go! It’s heavy enough to really seal the moisture in without being so heavy that it weights your twist out down! A little goes a long way. After you’ve moisturized, apply a little oil to your hands and slowly work it through your hair, focusing heavily on your ends!
#5 The last product that I apply in the game changer. I feel like a lot of folks count setting lotions out, or think that they’re more for relaxed hair when this couldn’t be farther from the truth! Nairobi, Mizani, and Shea Moisture all have fabulous setting lotions! Apply a pump of your setting lotion to each section and twist to the ends of your hair, giving the very ends a little twirl to make them curl! Flat twist outs equal more of a natural, fluffier, fuller twist out while individual two strand twists make for more definition and longevity!
#6 If you do a lot of styling at home, you may find it useful to invest in a hooded dryer from your local Sally’s or Amazon. Sitting under the dryer about thirty minutes insures that your twists will be fully dry in the a.m., although it is recommend to leave them in at least a day or two.
#7 A little oil to your fingers and begin unraveling at the bottom, using a wide tooth comb or a pick to rid yourself of any unsightly part lines. Remember to re-twist at night, you should get several days to a week out of your style!
We hope that you learned something new and enjoyed this post! Thanks for reading!
