The Best Products to Use for Low Porosity Hair

Have low porosity hair? Here are a list of must haves that will help you with allowing moisture to effectively penetrate your strands. (not sure what your hair porosity type is? learn more about porosity here.)

Hair Steamer

Steam helps to open the cuticles up so that you will not have to work as hard to get your moisturizers to penetrate. You could use the steam from your morning shower or you can directly and more effectively apply steam to your strands using products like the Qredew.

Hair Diffuser

Low porosity hair has a knack for taking forever to dry. When you find yourself short on time, use your blow dryer with a diffuser attachment to help speed the process of evenly drying your hair.

Hooded Blow Dryer or Thermal Deep Conditioning Cap

When you deep condition your hair it is important to use heat to maximize the penetration of your deep conditioning products. This is even more so true for low porosity hair. A hooded dryer or thermal deep conditioning cap is a definite must have.

Clarifying Shampoos

The cuticles of low porosity hair tend to lay flat, making it easy to acquire product buildup. Product buildup will make it harder for your hair to retain moisture so you need to make clarifying shampoos a regular part of your regimen.

Light Oils

Products that are on the heavier side tend to sit on top of low porosity hair which is why you want to use products on the lighter side. Try using Jojoba, Sweet Almond, Grapeseed or Argan Oil.

Humectants

Humectants are ingredients like Aloe, Honey, Agave Nectar or Vegetable Glycerin. They are effective at encouraging moisture to stay and hold onto the hair.

Fortunately for low porosity naturals once we get moisture into our hair, it retains moisture well. The challenge is getting the moisture into the strands due to how flat the cuticle lays. Using the above product recommendations will alleviate some of this struggle.
