For years now there has been talk about the horrors of hair grease, but is it really that bad? In short no, it’s not going to harm your hair or stunt growth if you know how to properly use it.
Previously, there was a lack of education about black hair products and how to properly use them. This means a lot of people would use grease back in the day with the hopes that it would moisturize hair.
I remember greasing up my hair all the time and then wondering why it was still dry. This is because I, like many others was using it all wrong.
Using only grease did harm my hair because I wasn’t giving it the moisture it needed. However, the harm caused was because I was not using it properly.
Hair Grease does NOT moisturize your hair, but it does seal moisture into your hair.
If you desire to use grease in your regimen you should be using it to help you prevent moisture loss as using it on its own will not moisturize your hair.
You should be using water or a water-based leave-in conditioner product first.
The grease can then be added on top as a protective layer that will add shine to your hair and make it harder for moisture to escape.
Grease ingredients that often cause a stir
Another reason why grease has been preached against is the ingredients that are often found in your typical store brands. Hair grease often has mineral oil or petroleum. The claim here is that it can clog your pores and it’s not the healthiest choice for your hair.
Both of these ingredients are heavy. So if you use them in excess it is very easy to collect product buildup on your hair. However, both are effective at sealing moisture in and keeping it there.
While mineral oil isn’t my personal favorite I have used some products in the past that contained mineral oil and absolutely loved it.
Was it heavier? Yes.
Your solution to avoiding product buildup and overly greasy hair is to simply use in moderation and cleanse your hair with a clarifying shampoo.
And guess what? You will be good.
Want to keep it natural? You can always use a natural pomade which is actually very similar to hair grease, just with more good for you ingredients in it.
Glad that EfikZara brought this topic up recently, it’s a really good point!
Hey Ariane! You are right sis, when my hair was shorter I used to use grease on my hair to lay it down. Because it was so short, my wash days were alot easier and I washed it more. And I never ran into any problems.
Greases can be used in a similar way to oils in many instances. And just like there is a confusion about oils “moisturizing”, same goes with the grease.
The thing that’s so bomb is thatas the natural hair movement begins to age a bit, we are becoming more educated, and sis… The world betta watch out cause the fierceness has only began!
Once we get our education game up, it’s a wrap! ha! That’s why websites like yours are so important to the community.
Thank you for your hard work.
