7 Tips to Promote and Maintain a Healthy Scalp

We already covered why a having a healthy scalp is important, now let’s talk about how to promote a healthy scalp and keep it that way. Here are 7 tips:

1. Keep a clean scalp.
It’s important to cleanse the scalp from time to time to clear the pores of product buildup, and to also maintain the normal pH of the scalp. The scalp has a pH of approximately 4.5-5.5, and products have their own pH that will shift the balance of the hair and scalp in either too much of an acidic or alkaline state. This may result in the growth of yeast or bacteria.

2. Don’t Co-wash every week.
Co-washing is a great way to infuse moisture into the hair, but it isn’t enough to remove heavy products from the hair and scalp. If you solely depend on a conditioner to cleanse your hair then you may suffer from clogged pores and a possible decrease in hair growth.

3. Eat a well balanced diet.
Hair and scalp health originates from within, so its very important to eat nutrient dense foods and avoid processed and unhealthy choices. Drink at least 2 liters of water per day to keep the body and hair hydrated.

4. Limit Tension.
Limit styles such as tight braids, up-dos, heat styling and chemical processing as these may cause tension and damage to the hair and scalp. Add variety to your styling by opting for looser heat free styles such as braid outs, and twist outs. Use a protein treatment at least once every 4-6 weeks to help strengthen the hair.

5. Essential Oils.
Essential oils such as peppermint oil, lavender oil, tea tree oil, and rosemary oil have great antibacterial benefits that help to keep the scalp clean and healthy. You can include these wonderful oils in your hot oil treatments, deep conditioners, and moisturizers for added nutrients to the hair.

6. Cut your nails.
I would recommend that you keep your finger nails low, neat, and clean when manipulating your hair. Long fingernails can be a breeding ground for bacteria and fungus that can be transferred to the hair while touching the scalp. Refrain from using your fingernails to scratch your scalp as sharp nails may create lesions and cuts.

7. Scalp massage.
Scalp massages promote increased blood flow to the scalp which produces healthy cells in the hair follicle. Massage your scalp using the pad of your fingers every 2-3 days for 5-10 minutes to keep the blood flow consistent. You may use an oil on the scalp while massaging if you wish for added nutrients and moisture (use the pads of your fingertips instead).
