Being natural is a LOT of fun: learning and loving your hair, trying new products, meeting other naturals, and just enjoying the endless possibilities that come along with having natural hair. We all have different hair types, textures, backgrounds, personalities, etc., but choosing to wear our hair natural is a common thread that unites us all. We came up with three things we think every natural should do- just because you’re natural!
1. Go to a natural hair meet-up.
Meet-ups are a wonderful tool within the natural hair community that are unique to a woman’s hair experience because before natural hair became popular, meetups weren’t happening the way they are now. Having natural hair isn’t a trend or a fad, it’s a lifestyle, and meeting other women who share this lifestyle is thought-provoking, eye-opening, and just plain fun! You can product swap, learn new styles, get your hair done, and have intelligent, memorable conversations!
2. Try some natural hair trends/challenges.
The Max Hydration Method. The Inversion Method. No Heat Challenges. Protective Styling Challenges. Trends aid in your natural hair journey because they help you discover what does and doesn’t work for your hair. Challenges are awesome for length retention and giving your hair a break. The best part of these trends and challenges is being able to share them with other naturals to see results from other women and in order to stay motivated along the way.
3. Get outside of your comfort zone.
Do something different such as adding some color or trying a new hairstyle instead of rocking the same look you usually do. You will more than likely be natural for the rest of your life so enjoy it! Last year I cut four inches off of my hair after promising myself I’d never do more than trim my hair again in my life. It was the best decision I’ve made for my hair since going natural nearly five years ago.
So true. I have attended about three meet ups and loved it. Also, i was skeptical about the inversion method but I tried it ans saw results. Colouring my hair is the next hehehe

Coloring is next for me, too! I will probably wait until next summer. Didn’t see results with the Inversion Method, though.
Every natural should compliment and encourage another natural. Living in the same climate, even with different textures I have been able to encourage other naturals in my community. I have been able to share something’s (products and techniques) that work for me. Every natirals should make at least one sample packet for a new natural. You know you have way to many products
Marsheilah,
Such great suggestions!
i actually want to go natural, though i have not started.i have not used relaxer on my hair for nine months now but the tips are still permed. The problem i seem to be having is that i used to have grey hair especially in the front and i like my hair black,i normally use dye on my hair(Texture and Tones) but wash off so fast,i dont really know how i will be able to manage my hair if i go natural.i dont know maybe if i start to dye my hair another colour but not black ,it might last longer. To cut the long story short i need all the advice i can get because i plan on cutting out all the perm still remaining and go natural this March.thanks.
Hi Beatrice,
I don’t know if you already did the big chop but if so, congratulations! I too am grey (now almost 85%) in the front and let me tell you its the best thing if you are a young natural. I get stopped/approached about my natural hair and being younger every time I wear it out. I have been natural for now going on 3.5 years – it was a rough start but I have embraced my gray and natural together, its not that hard. Anyway, if you do a search, May 30, 2015 is International Hair Meet Up Day and all over the world that is the day all naturals in every city, town is having their own individual natural hair event. Check the internet for your local event day.
Congrats on going natural! If your concerned about grays, you could try henna. It is a natural dye that is permanent. It is very strengthening but it can loosen up your curl pattern. Before deciding, you should probably do some research on youtube. One Youtuber who uses Henna and has informative videos on it is Curly Proverbz.
To Start, when I did my BC in December 2013, I felt liberated-It was good to feel the freedom of not having to perm my hair. Initially, I would wash my NEW hair from 2 to 3 times a week. I was reading everything on Natural hair. Some of the things I agreed with and some I thought was WAAAAAY out there. I am also seeing that everyone is stating to use the LOC method. If the Oil of choice is to seal in the moisture and whatever product then use a Cream, then how does the Cream work efficiently after the Oil seal? Any way, I use the LCO method and it works great on my porous hair. I love learning different things to do with my hair within reason of course. LOL Thanks ladies for the great ideas. I think I am going to do some research on Natural hair to see what else is good for my hair.
Thats what you have to do. Take the info and make it your own, no two heads of hair are alike. Glad you enjoy our website 🙂
